Crossmaglen Rangers Club Notes 18/09/17

SFC Qtr Final
Cross V Clann Éireann
The Athletic Grounds in Armagh was the venue for our quarter final clash with Clann Éireann .
The Cross V Clann Éireann game was the second game of the evening in the Athletic Grounds and a wet and dismal evening left conditions very slippy .
Rían O’Neill converted a ’45 in the opening minutes of the game to get the scoring of the night underway . A Conor McConville point in the sixth minute got Clann Éireann off the mark . Both sides exchanged points and a point for Clann Éireann in the tenth minute put them in the lead . We got three points in quick succession which give us a narrow lead but Clann Éireann responded with a point to keep the encounter close .
Just past the halfway point of the first half , Aaron Kernan converted two frees . We pushed on kicking seven unanswered points in the closing minutes of the first half , Rían O’Neill (3) , Kyle Carragher (1), Oisín O’Neill (2) and Padraig Stuttard (1). As the first half entered injury time Clann Eireann scored two points to leave eight between the teams at the break .
We got off to a dream start , a Kyle Carragher goal in the sixth minute of the second half put us in a commanding lead which we never relinquished . We had registered another two points before Clann Éireann converted a free to give them their first score of the second half . The O’Neill brothers added another three points , Rían (1) and Oisín (2) . Clann Éireann scored two points to reduce the lead but two points from Aaron Kernan and a superb strike from the boot of midfielder Stephen Morris which sailed over the bar sealed the victory for us . As the game drew to a close both sides scored a point . A semi final place now awaits . Well done to the entire squad and management .

Armagh Ladies Intermediate Championship Final

Cross V Sarsfields

The Ladies Victorious 2nd time round
Crossmaglen lined out for the Armagh intermediate ladies final replay Saturday evening, in damp conditions, but they weren’t going to let that get in their way of the coveted title. After last week’s draw, you could see the girls were not prepared to walk away with anything less than a win second time round.
Peter and Maria had made major changes to their line out, moving Aveen Donaldson to the backs and Lauren McConville into an out field position. This allowed the girls to move the ball long and fast to produce important scores and take an early lead. The younger players on the team showed great maturity and skill. We seen Faye Fitzpatrick and Coamhinn O’Neill leading the play and showing great courage taking on their players, to breakdown any forward moves that Sarsfields made. All their hard work was rewarded with two lovely goals from Orla Donaldson and Natasha Hamill. At half time the score was 2.05 to 0.04., but Cross knew they still had work to do.
Sarfields came out gunning in the second half, determined to narrow Crossmaglen’s seven point led, and it was clear that Cross was going to have to respond. The girls had to drop back, and protect their goal. Marie Luckie, the Crossmaglen goal keeper, made a number of impressive dives to prevent the ball crossing the line, and without doubt kept Cross in the game. However, a free from just outside square managed to slip over her head, into the corner. With five minutes to the go, the score was 2.10 to 1.07, but Sarsfields looked re-energised from their goal. Immediately after the goal, Crossmaglen were reduced to 14 players, as Shauna O’Callaghan was given a straight red. This give Sarsfields an boost and they rallied forward to score a second goal, with minutes to go. The supporters were willing the referee to blow the match up, as Cross won their own kick out, and moved the ball forward. Just then the referee, checked his watch, and called time on the final. A fantastic game of football and a great win for the Ladies! Ulster awaits them now, and they will meet the winner of St. James Aldergrove and Newtonbulter in the semi-final.
