Crossmaglen Rangers Club Notes 05/11/18

Ulster AIB Championship QF

Cross V Coalisland

Having rained for most of the day,  conditions were slippy in the Athletic Grounds on Saturday evening for our Ulster AIB quarter final clash with Tyrone champions, Coalisland.
Johnny McKeever got the opening score of the game in the second minute to get the scoring underway.
Coalisland got two points in quick succession, one from a free to give them a narrow lead with ten gone on the clock.
Three unanswered points from us, Mickey McNamee , Rían O’Neill (‘45) and Stephen Morris put us in front once again in this tense encounter.
Coalisland converted  a free to narrow the gap to the bare minimum before high drama ensued. A second yellow for Coalisland’s  Brian Toner left the Tyrone side down to fourteen players, seconds later they were reduced to thirteen when Eoghan Hampsey recieved a straight red.
Both sides exchanged points, Rían O’Neill our scorer after converting a free and with just minutes remaining in the half one still separated the sides.
As the game entered injury time, Coalisland got the equaliser, the result of a free before Rían O’Neill slotted a free over the bar to leave the score at the break;
Cross 0-6 Coalisland 0-5

Seconds after Martin McNally had thrown the ball in to commence the second half, Coalisland had registered a point to leave it all square once again. A second yellow for Callum Cumiskey saw us reduced to fourteen men. A Patrick McNeice point (f) put the Tyrone men in front once more before a second yellow for Johnny Hanratty left it thirteen aside. A super shot from play from Rían O’Neill equalised it once again and meant the last quarter was going be nail biting stuff.
Both teams registered two points each on the scoreboard, the O’Neill Brothers our scorers and with five to go the sides couldn’t be separated.
Rían O’Neill put us in front once more and as the game entered injury time, points from Oisin and Rían strengthened our lead. Coalisland’s Patrick McNeice brought the scoring to a close with a point and we ran out winners on a score line of;
Cross 0-12  Coalisland 0-10

Well done to all the lads and management. It was a tough battle!
We now play Gaoth  Dobhair  in the Semi Final of the Ulster Championship on the weekend of 17/18th November.

U21 SFC

Mullaghbawn V Cross
Our  U21’s travelled to Mullaghbawn on Sunday afternoon for their U21 Senior Football clash with Mullaghbawn.
Mullaghbawn were quick off the mark, they had the ball in the roof of our net when the game was only seconds old.
We responded immediately scoring 1-02 in the next four minutes, Miceal McCabe(1), Oisin O’Neill (1) and the goal thanks to Ruairí O’Neill. Both sides traded points, Micéal our point scorer and Mullaghbawn’s score the result of a free left us ahead by two with the game ten minutes old.
Two points from the home side both from frees levelled matters for only a short period of time. We pushed on, a point from Johnny McKeever was quickly followed by our second goal, Daniel Cumiskey the scorer and an Oisin O’Neill point give us a commanding lead with a little over ten to go until the break.
Mullaghbawn then went on a scoring spree, 1-02 in quick succession to leave it all square once again.
Rían O’Neill converted a free to edge us in front but two points from the Mullaghbawn boys (1F) put them in the lead. As the seconds ticked down to the interval a super shot from Rían O’Neill was caught by Ruairí O’Neill who kicked the ball into the back of the Mullaghbawn net to give him his second goal of the day which left the score at the break;
Mullaghbawn 2-07 Cross 3-06
Mullaghbawn got the opening score of the second half which was followed a fantastic score from the boot of Oisin O’Neill.
The home side registered two more points on the score board, (1,f) and as we entered the last quarter the sides were on an even par once again.
A Cían McConville goal put us in the lead by three, Mullaghbawn scored a point to bring it back to two before a trio of points from Rían, Miceal and Oisin strengthened our lead. Mullaghbawn pointed a free to reduce the deficit but we remained strong with three unanswered points from Cían McConville, Patsy Finnegan and Rían O’Neill. As the game entered injury time Cían McConville brought the scoring to a close with his second goal of the match which was our fifth of the day.
Well done lads and management.
Mullaghbawn 2-12  Cross 5-13
