Crossmaglen Rangers Ladies Football Notes

Crossmaglen Ladies 9th Annual Pre-Seasons Sevens in association with Shorts Sports and Cycles

Crossmaglen Ladies annual 7s competition has become a popular fixture in the Ladies football calendar. There were many returning teams, and also some new faces, with the club hosting twenty teams from across Ireland, all eager to contest the cup and shield competition.
The twenty teams took to the field, split into four groups and it went down to the final games in each group to decide the fate of the teams. Creggan Kickhams, Saul, Mullaghbawn, Kileavy were knocked out of the competition after the group stages, with Crossmaglen, Carrickmore, Forkhill, Burren, Naomh Gall, St. Brigid’s, Carrickmore and Donaghmoyne progressing to the shield competition. While Sarsfield Mountmellick, Corduff, Naomh Pol, Clann Mhuire, Bun Cranna, Maynooth, Armagh Harps and Errigal Ciaran qualified for the cup competition.
The shield quarter-finals, were extremely competitive with two games coming down to the last kick of the ball. Crossmaglen emerged to take on Burren, while Naomh Gall met Carrickmore in the Semi-finals. There was great excitement as Naomh Gall’s met the Tyrone side in the first semi-final. Naomh Gall’s pushed ahead and earned their place in the final, winning 3.03 to 2.03. The homeside (Crossmaglen) were up next against Burren. The both hard fought match, both side playing blanket defence strategies, making it difficult to score. Burren were victors at the final whistle, with a score of 1.03 to 1.01. The final was hard fought, with both side showing signs of tiredness after a long morning of football, in wet conditions. The Burren side again employed great defensive strategies but scoring from distance was no problem for the Belfast side. Noamh Gall collected Silverware!
Meanwhile at the other side of the tournament, Sarsfields Mountmellick, Naomh Pol, Maynooth and Armagh Harps qualified for the Cup Semi-finals. Sarsfields worked hard to secure their place in the final scoring a couple of early goals against the Belfast side. While the Maynooth and Armagh Harps game was so close that it went to extra time and eventually had to be decided by a shoot out. Armagh Harps went on to play Sarsfields, and while the conditions were terrible the football was very enjoyable to watch. The Armagh side defended hard in the first half but Mountmellick’s forwards supported each other well to produce some lovely scores. They moved the ball well, with their No. 5 leading the charge and setting up the plays to keep the Harp’s keeper under pressure. At half time Mountmellick were ahead but narrowly, by a goal and a point. Armagh Harps rallied at half time, but the extra time in the semi-final was starting to show and players were slowing. This gave Mountmellick the chance to drive forward, and they collected the cup for the second time in the history of the tournament.
The referees nominate a player at the end of each match and these names were they consulted at the end of the tournament over a well deserved hot dinner. Laura-Marie Marr of Mountmellick was finally selected as Player of the tournament sponsored by McNamee’s Butchers.
Thank you to everyone who helped out with our tournament in anyway, especially our tournament sponsors Shorts Sports and Cycles. It was a great day of football and we are looking forward to making preparations for the 10th Tournament.
