Crossmaglen Rangers Club Notes 15/01/18

Bank Of Ireland Ulster U21 Club Football Tournament QF

Cross V Southern Gaels

Our U21s travelled to Creggan Kickhams GAC in Antrim for their Quarter Final meeting with Cavan Champions Southern Gaels in the Ulster Club U21 Championship tournament. We had encountered the lacken-Gowna side two years ago in the St Paul’s minor tournament.
A cold day with a strong gale blowing across the field .
It was Southern Gaels who were first off the mark converting two frees in the opening minute. An Oisín O’Neill point in the third minute got us off the mark ,Southern Gaels scored another point before a Colin O’Connor point in the 7th minute reduced the deficit .
With ten minutes on the clock we suffered a hard blow , Gaels were awarded a penalty which Jamie McEvoy stopped but the ball rebounded and Gaels midfielder Brendan Laverty put the ball into the back of our net.
The next two scores from the boot of Miceal McCabe (one a f) left just two between the sides as the game entered the last ten minutes of the first half. Two further points from Gaels in the closing minutes left them ahead by four at the break .
S Gaels 1-05 Cross 0-04.
Southern Gaels started the second half as they finished the first half with a point from a free in the opening minutes.
Seconds later a superb strike from Oisín O’Neill landed in the Gaels net and helped to reduce the deficit to two.
Great goalkeeping from Jamie McEvoy prevented Gaels from strengthening their lead .
Points from Caoilin Dillion, Rían O’Neill and Colin O’Connor put us in the lead by the narrowest of margins.
Both sides scored two points each ( Oisín & Rían the scorers for us ) but three points in quick succession from Gaels(2f) left them with a lead of two as the clock struck the 60th minute. A Free for us in injury time which Cían McConville converted left us just trailing by one but it wasn’t to be our day and it is Southern Gaels who progress to the semi final of the U21 Ulster Club Championship. Hard Luck lads and management.
