Crossmaglen Rangers Club Notes 30/07/18

It has been a busy weekend with three games at home, two in the Senior league and one in the Intermediate League.

Sponsor A Ball

The Cross Square Hotel sponsored the ball for our Senior league fixture with Dromintee. Thanks very much to Gerard and Geraldine for your sponsorship and ongoing support for the club.

SFL Div 1A

Cross V Dromintee

A minutes silence for the late Lisa O’Connor preceded our Senior league fixture with Dromintee.
Dromintee got the scoring underway in the opening minutes. A Mickey Mcnamee point for us seconds later got our scoring underway and we settled quickly building up a substantial lead by end of the first half, Cross 1-10 to Dromintee 0-03. Rían O’Neill the goal scorer.
The trend continued after the break with our lead never being compromised. A half which saw us kick some fine scores with Tony Kernan amassing a personal tally of five points in the second half.
Cross 1-20 Dromintee 0-07

Intermediate League Div 2B

Cross V Ballyhegan
Micéal Trainor’s men  welcomed Ballyhegan to St Oliver Plunkett  Park for their league fixture
The first half was a high scoring encounter where in the first twenty minutes saw us score 1-06 to Ballyhegan’s three points. With minutes to go to the break, Ballyhegan went on a scoring spree , 2-02 in the space of three minutes to give them  the lead for the first time. An Oran Kieran point before the ref blew the whistle for half time left the game all square at the mid way point;
Cross 1-08 Ballyhegan 2-05
A point for each side at the start of the second half was followed by a Conor Savage point which put us in front by the bare minimum.
Ballyhegan got their second goal to edge them in front by two. Three unanswered points from us and with seven left on the clock give us the lead once again but Ballyhegan responded with a point to leave it all square once again  and to ensure we were in for an exciting finish to the game. Missed chances from both sides meant it looked like the game was going end in a draw but a John murtagh point in injury time was the match winner and secured the points for us.
Cross 1-14 Ballyhegan 3-07

Sponsor A Ball

The McKenna family, Crievekieran sponsored  the ball for our Senior league fixture with Clann Éireann and are pictured below presenting the ball to Johnny McKeever. Many thanks for your sponsorship.

Senior League Div 1 A
Cross V Clann Éireann
Both sides took a while to settle and a Clann Éireann point in the tenth minute got the scoring underway. Clann Éireann scored two more points before our first score came from a free converted by Tony Kernan. Clann Éireann pushed on scoring four unanswered points and as the first half drew to a close, we had our best spell, four points in quick succession which was  followed by a Clann Éireann point meant there was only two between the sides at the break.
Cross 0-05 Clan Éireann 0-07
The second half was only seconds old when Stephen Morris put the ball over the bar to reduce the deficit to one but Clann Eireann  responded three points in three minutes and increased their lead to four. We converted a free before Clann Éireann scored a goal to strengthen their lead with fifteen to go.
A trio of points from Aaron Kernan reduced their lead but Clan Eireann  responded with the same , three points to leave six between the sides with five to go.
As the game drew to a close, Clann Éireann got the final three scores of the match, three  points and they ran out on winners on a scoreline of;
Cross 0-10 Clann Éireann 1-16

Gaelic Sunday

Over the weekend of August 4/5 this year the GAA will mark the centenary of Gaelic Sunday.
In 1918 British Authorities made efforts to seriously inhibit and curtail the playing of Gaelic games. In particular there was an order for no GAA activity to be allowed unless a written permit had been sought and granted in advance.
The GAA would like clubs to help remember the events of 1918 this August 4/5 and to mark the anniversary.
On Sunday evening at 6pm we will mark this important milestone in Irish history when Donal McAnnallen, Historian and Brother of the late Cormac will give a lecture about Gaelic Sunday and the history of the GAA locally  during this period in history.
