Crossmaglen Rangers Club Notes 09/10/17

Paul Hearty

Paul Hearty (PH) , Roisin Murtagh (RM).

It is a great privilege for me to speak to the most decorated club footballer in Gaelic football , Paul Hearty .

(RM) Paul , it has been a fantastic journey . A journey which saw many victories and achievements .
(RM) Did you ever envisage the journey would be so long and that you would achieve so much ?
(PH) Starting out as a sixteen year old , I never ever envisaged what the next twenty three years would entail . With all the County , Ulster and All Ireland successes it has been a fantastic journey , a journey that no one expected .
After a ten year drought , all we wanted was a County title . We had a good young team and as the years went by we got better and better , adding County , Ulster and All Ireland Club titles along the way and to get thirteen county titles in a row was phenomenal .
It is a testimony to our Club and all the structures within the Club that we kept producing young players that came through to keep the successes going over the years .

(RM) Did the years go fast ?
(PH) Yes the years went so fast and it is hard to believe that it is over twenty years since our first All Ireland win .

(RM) Paul , your won nineteen Armagh Senior Championship , eleven Ulster and six All Ireland Club medals . An amazing feat .
Is there any win in particular that you would say was extra special .
(PH) The greatest win for me was the First Armagh Senior Championship victory in 1996 . As I said it before it was a decade since we won the Armagh Championship . We came back to the hall as winners , the hall was packed and there was a real party atmosphere . The response from the community was amazing . Then the journey through the Ulster and All Ireland championship which ultimately led us to Croke Park on 17th March 1997 . This was all new to us , something none of us had ever experienced before . So , for me the first victory was the most satisfying .

(RM) Over the years you have encountered many players/teams from the four corners of Ireland.
(PH) Is there any player / team that you would say where the toughest opposition ?
Peter Canavan was always a thorn in the side wether he was playing for his County , Tyrone or Club , Errigal Ciaran . He was a fantastic player , always very hard to watch , he was tricky and had he had all the tricks in the book . Peter could shoot and score from anywhere , he definitely would be up there with the toughest .

(RM) Finally Paul , is there any advice you would give to the young players of our club ?
(PH) I think first and foremost is to enjoy it , you can’t do your best at something unless you enjoy it and you have a passion for it . You have to be dedicated and committed to be the best you can be . The more you put into the sport the more you will get out of it . Hard work does reap its rewards at the end .

(RM) Paul , the entire Crossmaglen Rangers Club thank you for your long and dedicated service to the club . We congratulate you on all you have achieved .
We wish you , Olivia and your children well for the future and we hope you enjoy your well earned rest .
( PH) I would like to thank my wife Olivia , children Breanne, Erin Mae, Oran, Aoibhe and my Mother and late Father for all their love and support
